Not just for bread anymore
I've tried a different beer these last two weekends. Two beers. Two of the same. One each weekend. The first taste to hit the palate before the rest go down. I've heard a few stories about "wheat beer" and often wondered what it tasted like. It finally happened. I took a chance and tried a Hacker Pschorr Weiss beer. What a nice taste. Now that is a beer.
Wheat beer. Great stuff. From a country across the ocean. Somewhere.

Vista nightmare
This poor bastard is so fed up with Windows Vista and Microsoft that he writes an open letter for all to read.
I would like to tell him that I feel his pain, but... well, you know. I came to this same realization years ago.

Is there something wrong with the thinking behind this whole idea?
Is there something wrong with me putting this up here?
Is there anything wrong with you spending the amount of time you do with this?

New iMac coming?
There's been a lot of speculation and rumors flyin' around the Mac fanboy sites and one thing has generally been agreed upon: that there will will probably be an Apple announcement of a newly designed iMac on Aug. 7. This rumor has been bandied about on many websites and is now pretty much accepted as fact before the fact.
It's been generally accepted that the new iMac will have a brushed metal aluminum frame and won't have the large open area at the bottom of its face.
Here's one artist's conception of what he thinks the new iMac may look like. If he's right, this would be awesome.
Now comes a new rumor. The new rumored iMac will come with a new rumored keyboard. Kind of a flat keyboard very similar that of the Macbook.
Check out this link for keyboard pix.
I dunno. Whadda you think?

Windows vs. Mac
There have been many rivalries throughout history. Normans vs. Saxons, Edison vs.Tesla, Cubs vs. Sox, Bears vs. Packers, and Ford vs. Chevy to name but a few. The one rivalry I find myself involved in with many people I associate with is the now classic Mac vs. PC.
I've been driving Toyota Trucks since '89 because they're the best bang for the buck. I'd like to think of my Toyota as "a thinking man's truck". They run forever just with routine maintenance and a little T.L.C. And don't give me any crap about buying American. Fords, Chevies, and Dodges all have parts made in Canada, Mexico and China. The term "American Made" is now just a myth. Toyota has paid off for me big time.
In 1997, after Windows Hell Week with the "tower of power" as we called it, I bought a new computer. Having sweet memories of the pleasant times and late nights I spent on my old Apple IIe, I bought a Macintosh. A thinking man's computer. The best bang for the buck. I've never looked back.
Like many, I'm forced to use a Windows box at work. I've sort of kept pretty much abreast of Windows quirks, but the word "quirk" should not be used with the word "Windows" in the same sentence. "Nightmare" would be more appropriate. The work machine slows to crawl when the timed spyware application kicks in. There's so many security apps installed on it that it's a wonder anyone can get anything done at work.
All the Macs I've owned have performed snappily with no compatibility problems. I can pretty much run all the same or equivalent software that the Windows guys do. I have specialized apps such as iPhoto, iMovie and iDvd that come stock on the Mac but the Windows boys have to buy software if they want anything that's worth a shit.
They claim that there are more games for Windows than there are for the Mac. That may be true. But there's more to a truly enjoyable computer experience than just games. I would venture to say that you could walk into any major company's advertising department and find a department loaded with Macs, all due to their superior graphics capabilities. Many film companies have utilized Macs in the development of major motion pictures. Hell, THE WINDOWS LOGO WAS CREATED ON A MAC!
I let the Windows boys spew their crap and propaganda about their machines. I don't mind. I won't argue. But I know. I know of their frustration. I've been there. I try not to look smug, but I know all about the trouble-free pleasure it is to work and play on a Mac. I like to tell these guys that I can run their Window OS on my Mac any time I want. (Pffft! But why would I want to do that?) Then I just smile and shut up while they rant, rave and foam at the mouth.
Man, I couldn't live like that.
(Note: We'll revisit this rivalry from time to time. -FCG)
Stop motion
This is the best stop motion video I've witnessed so far. This endeavor must have taken countless hours to finish and edit. The film continuity is consistent throughout with a great musical theme without the hip-hip rap-crap that most videos have.
About 5 minutes.

Growing pains
"Dad, I'm hungry.
"Yeah, and yer ugly too, now get outta here."
"Dad, my foot hurts."
"Does yer face hurt? Cuz it's killin' me."
"Dad, I'm leaving for school now."
"Give 'em heck."

Aver como va
Before I started this undertaking, I referenced the word "blog" on Wikipedia. "Blogs provide commentary or news on a particular subject such as food, politics, or local news; some function as more personal online diaries."
I don't refer to SixPackTech as a "blog". It's not a diary of my life. I don't really like to talk about myself, but it's inevitible when one assumes the duties and/or responibility of one's own blog. It's just my intention of posting about stuff that matters to me, and to Mac users, PC users, beer drinkers, car nuts, Internet junkies, lovers of beautiful women, night owls and perhaps wild horse riders. I aspire to be informative, amusing and thought provoking but with a smattering of tech opinion, some automotive related facts, "man-stuff", and an "old-guy story or two. I refer to this place as a "website". Website sounds a little more manly anyway, and most people know what one is by now.
Being a blue-collar baby boomer with background in computers, mechanics, electronics, nuclear power, casino gaming and construction would possibly peg me in some people's mind as a glorified failure or a big BS-er. I'm neither, I assure you. However, I've known people who have been there and done that and are the first to talk about themselves. I don't like those guys either.
I cut my digital teeth back in 1982 when I bought an Apple II (before the II+) and remember staying up until the early morning hours, learning about the file structure, Basic and playing games. I got a IIe a few years later. I founded an Apple II User Group at my place of work in about 1984 and presided over it until my employment there was downsized in '92.
Then came the Windows days starting with Windows 3.1 and progressing through Win 95. When I tried to upgrade my machine to Win 98, I ran into such problems, that I lost patience, gave up and and vowed vengeance against the Microsoft Borg. It wasn't long after that I bought my first Macintosh in '97. A PowerPC 6500/250. Oh, what a joy! I've been on Macs ever since, progressing to an iMac G3, an Imac G5, and a Mac mini.
As a father of four adult males I've had a chance relive my childhood with each one as they were growing up. I've come to learn that my kids mostly enjoy what I enjoy, computers, fast cars, beautiful women, and now beer. As I have shared those happy times with the kids, I'd like to share my web experience with the readers and inject a little of warped sense of humor into the whole shebang.
This endeavor may prove to be more than I can handle. It will be a learning experience for me and I will make mistakes and maybe even step on a toe or two. I will probably do some stupid stuff now and again but I'll strive to avoid that. If it turns out to be pleasureable for all involved then that is my intention.
I hope you enjoy the place.
