Amazon.com has a d.i.y model kit called the Visible V8. Perhaps you could pick one up for that auto enthusiast in your family.
Assemble the kit, then turn the crank at the flywheel and watch the pistons, camshaft and valves operate just like they do for real.
I had one when I was a teen. I thought it was awesome, even before the word was invented.

Many graphics geeks are quite prolofic when it comes to Photoshop and image manipulation. The website, Worth1000.com has ongoing Photoshop contests and pretty much all of the submissions are worth viewing. You could spend hours on this site.
Their latest contest is to create a bizarre or unusual Christmas album for the holidays.
