Saturday Night Blue Collar Brew Review
Tonight's brew review offered me an opportunity to deviate from my normal routine of visiting the ol' beer store that I always do this time of week. Instead of heading out to the ol' same place, I paid a visit to another establishment here in the upper midwestern town of Morris, Illinois (sprawling metropolis with canyons of steel and neon tubing). I dropped in at the Four Seasons Liquors (FSL) just to see what I could see. I remember going to the Four Seasons years ago, when, at the time, all they had were coolers lining the walls full of domestics and shelves of nachos and pop.
I walked in around noon and was greeted by the gentleman behind the counter. I returned salutations and turned to look inside. HOLY CRAP! Man, they gotta stuff here! (Just remember, I don't get out much. Let alone to a new beer store.) I looked in the coolers where they had a lot of premium beers in there waiting to be drunk. Then more. Then the domestics. The center aisles were full of liquors and champagnes and sixpacks of warm premium brews and micro brews. I spotted at least a half dozen brand names of beers I'd like to try. I even saw beer from Uranus! Maybe not, but I was really whelmed. Almost overwhelmed.
I made my selection and brought it to the counter where the gentleman and I engaged in mild chit-chat. While we talked, he took each beer bottle out and dusted it off with a feather duster. Who does that anymore??? I mentioned my SixPackTech Brew Review and he insisted I write down the URL for him. As a gesture of goodwill, I told him I'd mention FSL in my review. So there ya go, man.
I left the store with a sixer of Pyramid Hefe Weizen Ale, a wheat beer that was mentioned on a recent episode of the Diggnation podcast. Hmm. The label on the bottle says that it's "unfiltered". Ah, unfiltered for extra taste. This oughta be good. 8 bucks and I was out the door.
Saturday night finally rolled around and the clock ticked those ticks that go so slow when you're waiting, but go so fast when you're having fun. Ah. It's time!
First bottle, first popped cap. I thrust my nose into the neck. Smelled quite mild with a slight bit of, um, difference. Taste perhaps? I took a sip. The beer has very good body and a very beery taste. Slightly malty, slightly hoppy. A great taste from the bottle. It tastes light for an ale. Just a few more bottle sips to get my yap ready for the treat.
I tipped the bottle and the mug caught every drop. A nice thick head came up and the brew revealed its true color. A light amber, slightly cloudy coloring with a mixture of regular and micro-bubble activity made for a glorious sight.
After a few swigs my taste buds started to settle down and the beer flavor became more apparent. Just enough to tantalize my tongue without demanding attention. Kinda like the neighbor kid who comes over and plays quietly and you forget he's there. This beer is a nice change, albeit slight, from the other beers of recent weeks. The hoppiness damn near went away and the malt flavor sort of hung around in the background tickling my taste buds quietly.
This Pyramid Hefe Weizen stacks up nicely against all the other premium brews I've reviewed here and I'm glad to add it to my list of favorites. Next time yer in my neck of the forest, stop off at FSL and pick up a sixer or two. It's right on the main drag of Route 47, across from Jewels. And tell the nice gentleman with the feather duster behind the counter that you heard about them from SixPackTech.
The SixPackTech ratings for Pyramid Hefe Weizen Ale are:
Taste: 8.9 - plays nicely with all your mouthy parts.
Smoothness: 8.3 - like snot on a doorknob.
Drinkability: 9 - like a favorite snackie-poo, ya can't stop at just one.
Bang for the buck: 8 - you'll be glad you had the dough in your pants.
Wife's all encompassing opinion: "It's really not bad, but a bit heavier than last week's."
